Product Downloads

Attach files to products. Manuals, spec sheets, safety data sheets, assembly guides and warranty documents appear on the product page, so customers stop emailing to ask for them.

Features, pricing and a free trial: Product Downloads for BigCommerce.

Overview

Product Downloads adds a downloads section to your BigCommerce product pages. You attach files per product, or per variant. Either upload them to the app, or link to files that already live on your own server. The app shows them to customers in a table.

It also counts every download, so you can see which documents customers open.

Installation

Install the app

Storefront Injects the downloads script into your store. Nothing shows until a theme is selected.

Install from the BigCommerce marketplace. Installing connects the app to your store and starts your first product sync. Every install includes a free trial. The app shows a countdown until it ends.

Select your theme

Storefront The downloads section appears on your product pages.

  1. Open Installation under Configuration.
  2. Pick your theme from the Theme list and choose Save theme.
  3. Theme not listed? Use the Send theme form under Send us your theme. We try to add submitted themes within 2 hours.

Manage Scripts

Storefront Adding or removing the script turns downloads on or off for that storefront.

Shows which channels the storefront script is installed on. On a multi-storefront store, add the script to each channel that needs downloads.

Product Files

Download stats

Storefront Nothing. This is reporting only.

The app opens on Product Files. Above the product list sit four tiles and a chart covering the last 30 days.

Tiles Product Files
Downloads · 30 days
Downloads across all products, with the change against the previous 30 days.
Daily average
Downloads per day over the 30 days, with your peak day beneath.
Files in library
How many files you have, and how many products they are attached to. Manage files opens the file library.
Top file · 30 days
The most downloaded file, with its count. It reads None yet until customers start downloading.

The Downloads per day chart shows the last 30 days for all products. Hover a bar to see that day's count.

Files attached by URL are counted too. The click is recorded before the customer is sent on to your server.

The product list

Storefront Nothing. Sorting and searching only change what you see here.

Every product gets a row with its name, SKU and ID, the files attached to it, and its downloads. By default the list is sorted by downloads in the last 30 days, highest first. It shows 100 products a page.

Columns Product Files
Product
The product name, with its SKU and ID beneath.
Attached files
The files attached to the product. No files means nothing is attached.
Downloads · 30 days
A small chart of daily downloads with the 30-day total beside it.
All time
Total downloads since you installed the app.

Click Product, Attached files, Downloads · 30 days or All time to sort by that column. Click it again to reverse the order. The sort list beside the search box also offers Product ID and Product SKU.

Type in Search name, SKU or ID and press Enter to find a product. Tick the box at the start of a row to select it. Shift-click a second box to select the range between them.

Manage files

Storefront Files you attach appear in the downloads section of that product page as soon as you save.

Choose Manage on a product row. A side sheet opens with every file in your library for that product.

  1. Upload, if you need to. Drop files on Drop files to upload, or click to browse. New uploads are switched on for you.
  2. Switch a file on to attach it to this product. Use Search files, or the All and Attached buttons, to find it.
  3. Add a title. The title field (Add a title customers will see) is the link text on the product page. Without one, customers see the file name.
  4. Choose variants, optionally. If the product has variants, each file shows an All variants chip and one chip per SKU. Pick SKUs to show the file only when that variant is selected.
  5. Save. Choose Save changes.

To delete files, tick the bin on each file. The footer button then reads Delete followed by the number of files. Deleting removes a file from every product it is attached to.

Reuse files wherever you can rather than uploading the same PDF per product. Attach one file to as many products as you like, and rename it once in the sheet.

Batch Add

Storefront The selected products all change at once, as soon as you save.

Select several products, then choose Batch Add in the toolbar. The sheet shows the number of products selected.

Batch Add replaces the files on every selected product with the files you switch on. It does not add to what they already have.

Upload files

Storefront Nothing until you attach the files to a product.

Upload files opens the file library, headed All files. Upload, rename or delete files here. Attach them from Manage on a product, or with Batch Add. After renaming, choose Save titles.

Accepted files

Storefront Nothing. This is what the uploader will and will not take.

RuleValue
File typesPDF, JPG, PNG, GIF
Maximum size20 MB per file
Anything elseHost it yourself and attach it by URL instead. Linked files can be any type.
A CAD file, a ZIP of drawings or a Word document cannot be uploaded. Put it on your own server and bring it in with Import Data URLs, which accepts any http or https link.

Import and export

Importing download URLs in bulk

Storefront Every product in the import gains its download links at once.

If your documents already live on your own server or a document management system, do not re-upload them. Import Data URLs attaches them by link instead. It is the only realistic route for a catalogue with thousands of datasheets.

  1. Open Import Data URLs under Data Management.
  2. Build a CSV with the four columns below, in that order. No header row.
  3. Choose the file under CSV file and select Import. Only .csv is accepted. The app reports how many attachments were imported and how many rows were skipped.
ColumnContentsNotes
AProduct IdThe BigCommerce product ID the file attaches to.
BTitleThe link text customers see, for example Installation manual.
CURLA full http or https URL.
DFile SizeIn bytes. Customers see it beside the link, exactly as you enter it.
128,Installation manual,https://files.example.com/manuals/128.pdf,2516582
128,Safety data sheet,https://files.example.com/sds/128.pdf,419840
129,Installation manual,https://files.example.com/manuals/129.pdf,2202009
Rows with a missing or invalid URL in column C are skipped, and the result message says how many. If your count comes back short, check column C first.
Importing adds files. It does not replace what a product already has. Importing the same CSV twice attaches everything twice, so delete the old files in Manage files before re-importing a corrected CSV.

Exporting attachments

Storefront Nothing. It downloads a file and changes no data.

On the Import Data URLs page, choose Export current attachments (CSV). You get a file named attachments- followed by your store hash. It has one row per attachment, in the same four columns and with no header row, so it can be imported again unchanged. It covers the channel selected at the top of the page.

Use it as a backup, or to edit titles and URLs in a spreadsheet. Remember that importing adds rows, so delete the old files first.

Settings

Showing downloads on product pages

Storefront The master switch controls the whole downloads section. Display as moves the panel on the product page.

Where the panel goes. Themes differ, so there are four placements. Try the automatic one first.
Display as Configuration › Settings
Include in Product Tabs (automatic)
The downloads panel becomes a tab alongside your existing product tabs. Set its position with Tab number and its heading with Tab title.
Add Shortcode
You place the panel yourself. Paste <div id="freshclickAttachments"></div> into your product page template wherever you want it.
Target Element
The panel attaches to an element you name in Target element with a CSS selector, for example #product-downloads. Choose Append to add it after that element's content, or Prepend to add it before. Use this when your theme has no usable tab set.
Accordian
The panel becomes an accordion section inside the element you name in Target element, with the same Append and Prepend choice. The option is spelled this way in the app.
With Product Tabs selected there is no code to add. The shortcode div is only needed for Add Shortcode.

What customers see

Storefront This is the table on your product pages.

Customers see a table titled Product downloads for screen readers, with the columns File and Size. Each file name is a link that opens in a new tab. A product with no files shows There are no downloads for this product.

If a file is attached to particular variants, it appears only while one of those variants is selected. Files attached to All variants always show.

Email Settings

Custom CSS

Storefront Your CSS loads on product pages with the downloads list, for all customers, as soon as you save.

Use Product page styles to match the downloads list to your theme's typography and spacing. Write your rules in the Stylesheet box and choose Save CSS.

Only edit this if you know CSS. Invalid rules can change how your product pages look.

Data management

Product sync

Storefront Nothing directly, but new products cannot be found in the app until a sync has run.

Product Sync pulls your catalogue into the app so files can be matched to products. Products sync automatically every 24 hours, picking up new and changed products. If you have changed products in BigCommerce and need them sooner, open Product Sync and choose Sync all products. Only run it when you need to.
